Women Professors Forum

Enlarged view: Women Professors Forum

Members of the external page ETH Women Professors Forum encourage young women to pursue a career in science or engineering. They make their expertise available within and beyond ETH Zurich, as well as support related Swiss initiatives in favor of equal opportunities among the sexes. Our members are distinguished, worldwide recognized experts in their scientific fields and experienced in leading and working in an international environment.
Each year, they receive awards and honors for their achievements and for training the next generation of scientists and engineers. Most of their students and researchers successfully pursue a professional career in the industry or the service sector. In addition, our members take over leading positions at ETH Zurich. For example Heidi Wunderli-Allenspach, one of the founding members of the forum, was Rector of ETH Zurich from 2007 – 2012. Several members of the ETH WPF Executive Board (past and present) are in charge of additional executive responsibilities, including Ursula Keller, Director of NCCR MUST, or Janet Hering, Director of EAWAG, and Sarah Springman, Rector and member of the Executive Board of ETH Zurich from January 2015.

Assistant professorship as a promotional instrument

ETH Zurich places great value on promoting youn researchers and has been using the instrument of assistant professorships for this purpose for many years. Due to experiences from past years, guidlines for the assistant professorship system at ETH were reviewed in February 2015. Assistant professorships at ETH promote young professorship and open up opportunities for further scientific qualifications in regard to an academic career for young researchers. Assistant professors are independent teaching and research units, who dispose of freedom of research and teaching as well as funds for pursuing their scientific goals. They have a reduced teaching responsibility with a focus on courses at the Master's level and are mostly free of administrative responsibilities. Assistant professors with Tenure Track are an effective instrument for ETH to win over excellent scientists early on in their career.
